The College Pro Scam Debate

Posted in College Pro Scam?

As a 19 year old sophomore at the University of Washington, when I first heard about College Pro and the opportunity to run my own business, it seemed too good to be true.  I was excited by the possibility of being a College Pro success, but anxious simply for the fact that it didn’t seem “normal” for a college student to be able to take on such an endeavor.  I knew that I wanted to run my own business someday, and I also knew that it would be a challenge.  Would College Pro walk me through that challenge?  What was the College Pro success path?

One of the first, and primary, things that began alleviating my fears was when my future General Manager told me up front that this would be one of the toughest things I’d ever do.  He told me that the leadership experience was real, and took me through many of the different challenges I’d face.  He also had me call some previous students who had been through the College Pro program, and not just College Pro success stories, but students who had struggled.  What stuck out to me was that, across the board, the biggest two themes was that it was a challenge and that it was an incredible learning and growth opportunity.

When I think of the word scam, I think of something that’s easy money, something that offers a way to “get rich quick” or make money through some type of pyramid.  When I think of scam, the words that don’t come to mind are challenge, hard work, growth, leadership, and experience.  What I came to realize throughout the interview process, and then throughout my time running a business as a student, and on the full time staff since I graduated, was that, unlike in a scam, a College Pro success story is one that’s filled with potentials realized.  It’s a story that found me as a student and turned me into a confident, optimistic, and successful adult.  It’s a story that taught me hard work, and helped me understand that I could accomplish anything.  I’m a College Pro success, and I’m so thankful I took on the challenge!

I’ve been a part of this company for 5 years now running a business for 4 and could not agree more. This has been by far the toughest endeavor I have taken on and also the most rewarding. I have learned more about myself and the world of business than ever could be taught in a classroom. Reality doesn’t lie and when you are pushed to your limits you learn what you are made of and what you really want for your future. College Pro has allowed me the structure to succeed and the autonomy to make mistakes, change, and therefore complete the full cycle of learning in multiple tasks. To reiterate, the hardest and most challenging role a young person can take on.
